Grown Up

I guess I've been a grown up for while now.  It's a little hard to deny when you've crossed the 30 thresh hold.  When you're a child you figure that one day you're just suddenly a grown up.  One day you know how life works and you're allowed to eat dessert first and you don't have a bed time.  As a kid you're more focused on those last two but you figure that first one happens too.

Thing is, the older you get the more you realize that for everything you figure out in life it raises a dozen questions.  Somehow you never eat dessert first and, in fact, have to start banning those desserts because someday soon someone is going to start talking to you about cholesterol and blood sugar levels and scary type things.  And most importantly you start wishing you were able to go to bed at 8pm because being a grown up makes you tired.

I'm pretty sure 8 year old me would be a little disgusted by this... though I do still sometimes stay up way too late reading a book... I just don't have to do it using the light that comes in through my open bedroom door (so glad I started that whole "the door has to be open a hand width thing somewhere along the way).

Husband and I are both full time employed for only the second time in our marriage.  In many ways it feels like the first time because this is the first time one of us isn't chronically under employed.  That means this week we both opened retirement savings plans.  After years of packing up everything and moving across an ocean (I liked doing that in my 20s) it feels good to finally be at a grown up point... we have a house and a car and bills and demanding pets and retirement plans.  It feels nice to be a grown up.
