Sophia Recovery Center

Saturday afternoon I attended a really lovely fundraising event for the Sophia Recovery Center with a bunch of great ladies.  Even though Sophia has been in Saint John since 2008 I hadn't heard of it until about two weeks ago.  It's a place for women recovering from addiction to get support and counseling but also to support each other.  This was their first big fund raiser but you'd have thought they'd been doing them for years based on the organisation and turn out.

I went with a group of ladies from the Canadian Progress Club Ignite which has just been formed in Saint John.  Our purpose is community service, volunteer work and fund raising with Sophia Recovery Center being a charity we've decided to support this year.  Looking forward to getting more involved.

The theme of the event was "Pearls of Wisdom" (referencing the fact that Sophia means Wisdom in Greek).  Fundy Pearls were providing proceeds from their jewelery sales to Sophia Recovery Center so there was shopping as well as dessert (always a great combination) and everyone in attendance got to pick a clam shell and leave with their own cultured pearl.

You had the option of getting your pearl set in a little locket on the spot (again proceeds going to Sophia).  We ladies are looking forward to wearing ours for our Canadian Progress Club Charter Night later in April.  That's how new our club is... we're being charted next month but we're already off and running.

10% of any population suffers from addiction.  1 in 4 families is affected by addiction.  Addiction does not discriminate by gender but historically a lot of addiction treatment has been predominately male-oriented.  Sophia is the first place to open specifically to support women with addiction in the Atlantic Region.
